National Community Gathering™
Did you know that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness?
Do you feel strongly about raising awareness about eating disorders?
If yes, please read on to learn more about the National Community Gathering being held on the evening of February 26, 2009.
What is the National Community Gathering™
The National Community Gathering™ is an event that takes place simultaneously in cities throughout the country, on February 28, 2008. It is for those who are dedicated to informing the community about the prevention and awareness of eating disorders while advocating for mental health parity (legislation changes regarding eating disorders).
Where are National Community Gatherings™?
People are invited to have Gatherings in a variety of places like restaurants, coffee shops, private homes, schools, churches, or offices. It just takes people and a room to discuss the topic at hand. We hope to have Gatherings in at least 250 cities simultaneously.
What does having a National Community Gathering™ accomplish?
Strength in numbers! Many gatherings being held around the nation coming together on the same night will raise national awareness about healthy eating, and promote conversation about the prevalence and devastation of eating disorders. These Gatherings will help in efforts to lobby for more insurance coverage, provide education, implement programs that provide preventative strategies for those at risk, and offer support for sufferers and their families.
Is this a fundraiser in disguise?
No. The focus of the National Community Gathering™ is to draw attention to the number of people who are in some way affected by disordered eating.
How can I become involved in the National Community Gathering™ ?
Anyone concerned about the prevalence of eating disorders can take the initiative to coordinate their own local Community Gathering. Your gathering is your own. It can be 5 people or 500. The goal is to spread the message that eating disorders are not a choice and are an epidemic. If you would like to host a Community Gathering: please email bbishop@theelisaproject.org for assistance and materials.
What happens at a National Community Gathering™?
It is up to you! However, if you need suggestions, here are a few:
- Find a professional to plan a brief program.
- Create a forum for those who have been affected by eating disorders and want to share their stories and offer support.
- Host an advocacy parity party! Have attendees contact their local representatives and advocate for mental health parity.
